Therapy dog Annabelle is a real treat for Falls residents

''I can still eat, gab and complain and I do it all,'' confided Emma Holmes, 87, scooting her wheelchair behind Annabelle, a luscious English bulldog and the attraction of the day.

Stand back.

Dressed in a sequined pink brimmed hat and feathery boa, the 50-pound pooch provided a breathtaking view, a combination of slink and waddle as she strolled through the Cuyahoga Falls Village Retirement Community, home to about 130 seniors, including the charming Holmes.

''She's the dearest thing,'' said another resident, Anita Plazzo, 80. ''It's the second time I've seen her. I'm still fairly new here.''

It's a regular route for the therapy dog and her mother hen, Cindy Vacco of Kent, who've been visiting the home for four years to bring doggie kisses and good cheer to folks who sometimes struggle to find them.

TONAWANDAS: Suddenly single dad

When a woman in her late 30s becomes pregnant, her doctor typically is more guarded about the unborn baby's health. Later-life pregnancies are considered high risk for a number of reasons.One-month-old Rebecca Ripson came into the world in perfect condition. It's her mom who didn't make it.Patricia A. White, 38, died shortly after giving birth Dec. 29 at Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo. Last-minute complications took her life on what should have been a day of pure joy."She never even got to see the baby," White's fianc, David Ripson Jr., said. Throughout her pregnancy, Patty's health apparently was not in question. She was enrolled in Children's high risk program because the combination of her age and prior history — two miscarriages — recommended an extra-watchful eye be kept on the baby.Patty carried Rebecca to full term without incident and was, in fact, four days overdue when her doctor recommended induced labor.

CONSTRUCTION: Autodesk buyouts give it more depth in building modeling

San Rafael-based design software developer Autodesk Inc. has taken a big step further into green building with the purchase of two building information modeling, or BIM, software developers.

The company last week announced the acquisition of Green Building Studio, a Santa Rosa company formerly known as GeoPraxis that has garnered excitement among architects for providing solutions for designing projects deemed to be environmentally sustainable.

At the same time, Autodesk said it picked up Carmel Software, a 12-year-old San Rafael company that makes mechanical engineering software for sizing heating and cooling systems.

Both companies have been involved in the BIM movement that is changing the way buildings are designed. In the context of the philosophical and regulatory movement toward more green building, the use of BIM is helping architects and engineers try different orientations of a structure to the sun or configurations of expensive, high-efficiency climate-control systems early in project design.

Today's Colonist

It's usually in track and swimming that milliseconds mean the difference between victory and defeat.

But Victoria Salmon Kings defenceman Gary Gladue lifted a page from those sports yesterday at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. His power-play goal with less than one second remaining in overtime -- 00.07 seconds to be exact -- gave the Salmon Kings a hairy 5-4 ECHL victory over the Las Vegas Wranglers before 4,802 fans.

"I heard the fans yelling 'shoot, shoot," said Gladue.
