Fruitland water users install water treatment system to meet EPA regs

The Fruitland Domestic Water Company has 175 shareholders with water being provided to 140 homes on Fruitland Mesa. The private water company has just completed construction of a new water treatment system that meets all EPA standards. The system will be fully operating by this spring.

Pipeline construction began in 1979 with the first 40 customers receiving water in 1980. The 20-mile pipeline was established primarily to bring water to livestock on the mesa. A drought in the 1970s made it hard for ranchers to water their cattle. From that beginning, more families have moved to Fruitland Mesa and the water company served their needs. The company began working on the new system in 2005.

The new filtration system was needed due to EPA regulations that the state must follow.

Council tackles drought woes

According to the public health inspector, some schools have been forced to dismiss classes early or close because of an absence of water at the institutions.

Mayor Harold Brown told the meeting that the council would have to, in the short and medium term, consider purchasing a water truck, while seeking to engage the National Water Commission (NWC) for some active assistance. Neither the local NWC nor the parish council has any vehicles for that purpose.

During question time on the council's order paper, former mayor and sitting councillor for the Seaforth division, Joan Spencer, said the drought was presenting severe hardships for her constituents, who did not have regular supplies of potable water.

And went she meets guys on dates (like on the show) and they say: "Sorry, babe, you are a little too big for my taste." She will say:" Well loser, I am Tyra!" and the guy will say:" I know!"

Harman lobbied over gender pay gap

Union activists have lobbied a Government minister as part of a campaign to close the gender pay gap.

Officials from Unison delivered a strong message that women deserve as much pay as men to Labour's deputy leader Harriet Harman at the party's Spring conference in Birmingham.

The union's head of local government Heather Wakefield, women's officer Sharon Green and other female officials pointed out that women's average pay was still "scandalously" 17% less than men's.

Unison's general secretary Dave Prentis said: "Thirty years on, the Equal Pay Act is still seen by many employers as a take-it-or-leave-it bit of legislation.

"But we want to see it implemented robustly across the UK.

"Local authorities have dragged their feet in implementing equal pay, blaming the lack of cash.
