Crossbow hunting advances

The establishment of a crossbow hunting license in Virginia raced through the General Assembly without a glitch, but it faced a challenge at the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries board meeting in Richmond Thursday.

What's the hurry, was the question of several leaders of bowhunting organization.

The General Assembly put the bill on an emergency track that gives the DGIF authority to rush the license into place by the fall hunting seasons. That's the goal of the department, but some bowhunters are likely to have a different view during a series of hearings scheduled across the state.

Several bowhunting critics of the license said they did not oppose crossbows, they just don't want to share their archery season with them.

The new license fee would be $12.50.

Water found flowing on Mars? Not yet

NEW YORK: Researchers claim to have found no trace of liquid water on Mars, casting doubt on an earlier research which indicated presence of bright spots in some Martian gullies.

"It rules out pure liquid water," according to lead researcher Jon D Pelletier of the University of Arizona.

Pelletier and his colleagues used topographic data derived from images of Mars from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Researchers applied the basic physics of how fluid flows under Martian conditions to determine how a flow of pure liquid water would look on the HiRISE images versus how an avalanche of dry granular debris such as sand would look.

"The dry granular case was the winner.

Pool Repairs To Relocate UCSB Aquatic Teams

Students taking a dip in the Recreation Center pool may find themselves competing for lanes with the UCSB swim and water polo teams over the next two months.

Student access to the Recreation Center pool will be temporarily limited while repairs are made to Campus Pool, the teams' usual practice location. The Campus Pool repair project, which began Tuesday, is expected to last until the second week of April. The UCSB swim and water polo teams will hold their practices in some areas of the Recreation Center pool during this two-month period while the filter and pump systems at the almost 70-year-old Campus Pool are replaced.

Several lanes of the Recreation Center pool will be reserved for the teams during their practice times, but the pool will still be open to students during all regular operating hours.
