Crackdown on rowdy drinkers
The Evening News revealed earlier this month how at least one complaint a day about noisy smokers is being made to the local authority on the issue. Councillor Sheila Gilmore, the city's antisocial behaviour leader, said: "The bylaw is not just for the city centre, it's intended to be used across the city. "In some other parts of the country it is against the law completely to drink outdoors unless in pavement cafes, but we didn't want to be seen as killjoys. "The police have told us that their officers will use their own judgment in every individual case and that a commonsense approach will be taken." A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Police told the Evening News: "We will be duty-bound to enforce the laws as set down by the Scottish Executive, working alongside the council, but we would not like to make any further comment at this stage.
Europe's enthralled by U.S. presidential race
When the Pew Global Attitudes Project found that positive opinion of the United States had plunged - in Germany, for example, from 78 percent in 2000 to 30 percent in 2007 - it was often lost that the Germans and other Europeans wished it weren't so. They liked it better when, as in the '90s, U.S.-European relations were on an upswing. They hoped, without being sure, that much of the transatlantic chill had to do with the specifics of the Bush administration and yearned for a change in course in Washington - which, they understood, would probably require a change of occupants in the White House. Now that Bush's last days as president are finally in sight, Europeans join many Americans in feeling an intense, almost visceral desire to turn the page and start fresh.
DEVELOPMENT: LV land prices rise in quarter
Land values in Las Vegas rose 21.8 percent during the fourth quarter to an average of $1.51 million an acre for 452 acres sold compared to the previous year's quarter, Las Vegas-based research firm Applied Analysis reported. The price was down 25 percent from $2.01 million an acre in the third quarter. Fourth-quarter sales included 13 acres of resort property, such as former sites for failed high-rises Ivana Las Vegas, Icon and Majestic. Those sites averaged $20.1 million an acre. Excluding land sales around the Strip, the average price was $939,400 an acre, still a 20.1 percent increase from the fourth quarter of 2006. .
Richard Roberts: God told me to resign

Richard Roberts told Oral Roberts University students Wednesday that God spoke to him last Thursday and told him to resign. Students cheered and cried as Roberts spoke for about three minutes at the school's chapel service Wednesday, five days after his resigned as the school's president. Roberts told the students that God spoke to him Thursday and told him to step down. Roberts said he initially resisted the instructions, but God told him that if he would resign, the school would be blessed ''supernaturally.'' Roberts resigned Friday. On Tuesday, Yukon businessman Mart Green promised the school up to $70 million, more than enough to erase the school's debt.
