| Old Media Lets Obama's Shaky CEO Earnings Claim Go Unchallenged
It's an extraordinarily clever claim. It gets your attention. It's misleading. And of course, Old Media isn't questioning it. I am referring to the following statement made by Barack Obama in radio ads currently running in Ohio and Texas: Some CEOs make more in 10 minutes than some American workers make in a year. In the full context of the ad, I believe that what Obama wants listeners to take away is that "Quite a few CEOs typically, year after year, make more in 10 minutes than some American workers make in a year." But let's limit things to the literal wording. Start with a full-time minimum-wage worker who earns (rounded) $12,000 annually ($5.85 per hour times 2,080 hours is a bit more than that). How much would a CEO have to make in a year to be earning over $12,000 every 10 minutes? .
Council OKs sales tax hike to pay off Coliseum bonds
The increase will add 25 cents on the purchase of $100 in goods.Six aldermen voted in favor of the measure, which included stipulations that all of the money generated by the increase go toward paying off the $29.5 million in Coliseum bonds and that the increase end in 2015. Aldermen Jim Fruin, Ward 9; Judy Stearns, Ward 4; and David Sage, Ward 2; voted against the increase.Despite his vote, Fruin said he was supportive of raising the sales tax.Fruin said he did not see the point to the stipulations suggested by Ward 7 Alderman Steven Purcell because the council can revisit the sales tax every year and Fruin added he did not want to tie the hands of future councils, which may need the money for emergencies. Fruin suggested the council agree that the priorities for the money should be the Coliseum bonds, rebuilding the city's cash reserves and adding to its road improvement budget.“I would have drawn it (the motion) differently but I am supportive of the sales tax," Fruin said. Those who voted for the increase were Purcell, Allen Gibson, Ward 1; Kevin Huette, Ward 3; Jim Finnegan, Ward 5; Karen Schmidt, Ward 6; and John Hanson, Ward 8.The city is facing a $3 million shortfall in its $75 million general fund.
The Weedpatch Gazette
Rhett had his reasons for suggesting this to Scarlett in GWTW, but Alec Baldwin had his reasons for asking "Am I in hell?" in "The Shadow," and I have my own reasons for wondering the same thing. Not everyone is mourning the passing of William F. Buckley and some are quite willing to consign him to the fiery pit. I have never owned a yacht, but his writing of the marvels of yachting and adventures in seafaring for the wealthy as though all good Americans should share his enthusiasm for the things money and privilege bestow on those favored of the gods was his stamp of approval among the favored few. Face it, that circle would seem to be the only one unbroken if anyone is really looking for an answer to the question raised in the hymn. However, love him or hate him Buckley did speak for a certain class, most of whom are not going to make it through the Pearly Gates in the opinion of some despite their circle remaining unbroken in this world and perhaps remaining unbroken in hell.
Weakness in mission exposed, critics say
It saddens me to read all the doves wanting our 'soldiers' to leave the mission, turn tail and run home. The 'soldiers I have talked with ( 2) are eager and willing to get back to Afghanastan, to help Afghans protect themselves from these murderous insurgients. Stories of decapitations of children and women, are common. One of the soldiers has re-upped for a third tour. does this sound like demoralized troops ? Not to me. Maybe when the nancyboys commenting are attacked in our Country , they may see a need for 'soldiers'. Until then keeping the war over there seems like the right thing. Woo pig
I have no tech skills but a search for Arkansas Young Professionals in the little box on the top right of this page does not lead me to an archived link of the lost post mentioned above. Which leads me to a suggestion for a button at the bottom of the main blog page... Back for older posts. Anyway browsing around the net... NYT's Paul Krugman (link at my name) held an online book salon at firedoglake this afternoon with a really good discussion and Ian Welsh wrote a uplifting post/thread afterwards.. Somewhere along thew way I stumbled across this quote by Samuel Adams: "If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms.
