Ask the PCWA for water conservation rewards

Water costs are on the rise and the Placer County Water Agency can do more to empower customers to avoid future costs through economic incentives.

Residents of Auburn have recently been faced with the increasing costs of water, both on the supply side (PCWA) and the wastewater disposal side (city of Auburn). While these cost increases may have shocked many, the inescapable fact is these costs primarily reflect what we, the customers, demand — sufficient quantity and quality of water supplied to our homes and sufficient capacity of our sewage treatment plant to treat wastewater flows. Objecting to proposed cost increases is too late in the game to avoid increased costs. Changing what we, the customers, demand is the more effective way of heading off the future shock of water costs.

That $500,000 rambler

It shouldn't come as news to anyone that home prices in the Seattle region have soared.

Theo Eicher, founding director of the University of Washington's Economic Policy Research Center, offers a thoughtful analysis of how zoning laws and other land-use regulations have driven home prices up by an estimated $200,000.

Illuminating, but nothing that ought to spur changes in at least one key land-use regulation, the state's Growth Management Act.

Residents in the Puget Sound region are getting a tremendous return on their investment. Restrictions on development have preserved the character and environmental appeal of our area.

Policies sometimes work at cross-purposes. Yes, state and local growth-management laws restrict where homes can be built, affecting supply that contributes to rising prices.

Black Smokers: Extraterrestrial Life on Earth!

At the bottom of the oceans, the lowest level of the ocean waters, submarine volcanoes are found. They erupt periodically, but also phenomena similar to others that accompany terrestrial volcanoes, such as submarine geysers, can be found and are called hydrothermal vents (hot vents) or black smokers. The submarine vents, linked to the submarine volcanic activity, trigger an unusual life abundance on the bottom of the ocean, at depths of 800-3,500 m (2,660-10,366 ft) in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, but also in the Red Sea. In these areas, animal communities emerge, formed of gigantic species, if we compare them to their counterparts at the surface. These animals are usually de-pigmented, white (but not necessarily) and blind, even if some worms and bivalves can be bright red due to the respiratory pigment hemoglobin.

Shorter menu could be big for Mt. Pleasant pizza eatery

With Andolini's, Bacco, Iacofano's Deli and Pizzeria, Pasta Grille, Sette, and now La Pizzeria, it is easy to satisfy your appetite for most things Italian.

La Pizzeria is in a strip mall shopping center at Coleman and Houston Northcutt boulevards in a space formerly occupied by a pizza restaurant.

The new owners have spruced up the place by enclosing a narrow side patio, adding mood lighting by way of an odd assortment of stringed lights, dried flowers and plastic tablecloths.

It straddles the crossroads of eat-in and carry-out design. There is a tall counter where you can place your order to go. Outdoor seating, a few tables in the front of the restaurant and the side patio provide table service.

A chalkboard lists the daily specials (which could include an appetizer, pizza, panini, pasta or dessert) along with a pasta menu of baked ziti with Bolognese sauce, lasagna, gnocchi with a Gorgonzola sauce or a red sauce in the style of Sorrento.
