Of the 100-some features questing for a distributor at January's Sundance Film Festival, only a handful found the holy grail: worldwide theatrical distribution with an advance minimum guarantee and back-end participation. With an unforgiving and glutted marketplace for indie films, where the cost of prints and ads to keep a movie in theaters is punitive for everyone, there's no appetite for risk-taking. The key question is, when will an alternative distribution outlet for indie films emerge -- an outlet that can interest enough viewers to bring in meaningful returns? The film industry is rife with eager alternative distributors pitching their wares -- but making money isn't usually part of the equation. "The long-range outlook for specialty film is to move more to home markets.
LAYOFFS, FEWER HOURS: Slowdown lands on gaming Company officials say ...
The economic slowdown that has affected other job sectors throughout the past year has found its way to the gaming industry. Large Strip companies and local gaming operators throughout Clark County have begun taking steps to trim hours and payrolls wherever possible because of a slowdown in business, company officials acknowledged Thursday. "The notion that Las Vegas is immune from these downturns in the economy is completely false," MGM Mirage Senior Vice President Alan Feldman said. "We may be better able to withstand it than other marketplaces. Through the years we've proven that we are, but we're not immune from it." The gaming companies will not say exactly how many people have been affected by layoffs and cuts in hours, although they have acknowledged some of the cutbacks.
Green idea pays: Inventor's furnace design earns grant
Almost 25 years after Laurence Green of Gildford invited a group of state officials to his workshop, trying to convince them of the benefits of his smokeless wood-burning stove, he still believes in his invention. Recently Triangle Communications of Havre agreed to give Green, 90, and his wife Helen, 82, a $1,000 Community Vitality Grant to help him out with his concept, now referred to as a smokeless furnace. .

Gossage, a dependable bouncer on the mound who was known as Goose, pushed his way to baseball's highest honor Tuesday when he was elected into the Hall of Fame. .
